325 Consulting’s Interim Consulting Practice has been operating for the last 5 years and continues to be a core and expanding part of our offering to clients and candidates.

The interim consulting market continues to grow globally and within Australia.

What’s the impact of this growth?

There are an increasing number of candidates interested in interim consulting opportunities rather than a more traditional linear career path. The net impact of this is that there are an increasing number of clients taking advantage of hiring interim professionals from the increasing talent pool.

Below is a review of our Interim practice over the last 12 months to give you a feel for the Opportunities and the Talent that we have access too.

Interim Opportunities in 2019

We filled more than 30 Interim consulting assignments in the last year.

60% of our placements were with Industry clients across a range of sectors including – Retail, Consumer Goods, Financial Services, Energy, TMT, Government and Healthcare and Pharma. Clients ranged from large ASX listed corporate to smaller growth companies.

The remaining 40% of placements were made with Boutique Consulting firms of varying size from small to large and across different industry and functional specialisations including Supply Chain and procurement to digital transformation.  

Placements by location

  • 55% Sydney

  • 35% Melbourne

  • 10% Brisbane, Canberra and Auckland

Placements by Daily Rate %

  • 35% of placements – Candidates were on $1000 - $1200 per day +GST

  • 50% of placements – Candidates were on $1300 - $1600 per day +GST

  • 15% of placements – Candidates were on $1800 - $2200 per day +GST

Contract Duration

The shortest was 2 weeks up to contracts that have rolled on for more than 12 months. The average contract length has been approximately 4 months.

Project Examples

  • Financial Services – 3 months covering projects whilst hiring the permanent role

  • Consumer Goods – 4 months examining Asian Growth Strategy

  • Retail – 6 months maternity cover in Group Strategy

  • Health – Post Merger Integration strategy & PMO

  • Energy – 5 months support the strategy team during a workload peak

 

Interim Talent in 2019

  • 90% of candidates we placed had a minimum 2+ years of experience gained in a recognised consulting firm.

  • 45% of placements – had worked for a Tier 1 Consulting firm (McKinsey, BCG and Bain)

  • 35% of placements – had worked for a Tier 1.5 or Boutique Consulting firm (Kearney, L.E.K. Consulting, Strategy&, PJP and PIP) 

  • 20% of placements – had worked for a Big 4 (Deloitte, PWC, KPMG and E&Y) or Accenture.

Talent Pool

We have more than 3,000 within our network interested in Interim opportunities. 80% of candidates in our network would have a consulting background with the remaining 20% typically having experience in Industry strategy roles or Investment banking and M&A advisory roles.

Categories of Interim Consultant

Career Choice Interim Consultant -They have made a conscious decision to contract for an extended period typically beyond 1+ year often they will often spend 2-5 years+ contracting.

New to Market Interim Consultant – Typically includes candidates that have relocated to Australia from overseas either they will hold a Working Holiday Visa or have a skilled migrant visa.

Permanent Candidate open to Interim – Maybe immediately available and open to contracting whilst looking for the right permanent role.

Entrepreneurial Interim consultant – Looking to take on Interim projects to supplement cash flow whilst launching or discovering their start-up.
